Inspiring Growth and Change Across Generations

Jason Jackson (Shiny Buffalo) is an oskapios (traditional helper), social worker, program developer and trainer, and connector for people and communities in recovery. He has 24 years of experience working with clients and co-developing cultural and Cree spiritual programs in several contexts, including: Correctional Service Canada, Native Counseling Services of Alberta, Stan Daniels Healing Centre, Edmonton Public School Board, Edmonton Catholic School Board, the Oak Hill Ranch, and more. As a liaison, he has placed himself to create supports and preventative measures for Indigenous peoples. He has helped to transition street- involved individuals back to their home communities, added to the core Headstart programs for youth, developed training programs and modules, advocated for and connecting elementary school parents with resources, worked with families as a home support worker, supporting children who are placed in non- Indigenous families, provided addictions counseling at inner city junior and senior high schools, and advocated for cultural supports in court systems. He has also helped to educate the school system itself by taking educators and leaders to attend ceremony. Jason’s work is informed by his background as a survivor of residential school.
